Teacher Professional Development and Research Programs

Literacy

School Literacy and Culture Project
The School Literacy & Culture Project is dedicated to professional development in literacy including beginning reading, early childhood development, writing, and culture.
The Classroom Storytelling Project is a year-long, one-on-one mentoring program for teachers of children (2-8 years) involving classroom visits and monthly seminar discussions surrounding research about reading, writing, and child development.  Cultural Conversations  provides a forum for teachers to talk about the impact of race, culture, and ethnicity on classroom practice.  Other services the project provides are the Summer Creative Writing Workshops for Young People, the Reading, Writing and Cultural Connections Summer Institute, and one-day professional development workshops.

School Writing Project
The School Writing Project engages teachers in semester-long workshops during the school year, during which they participate in a two-track process: the experience of being active writers themselves and the exposure to information current best practices in writing and literacy instruction.

Science

Model Science Labs
The Rice Model Science Lab programs are truly unique, one of a kind programs of intensive teacher professional development lasting an entire academic year. The goal of the Model Science Labs is to empower science teachers to be better teachers by learning new ways of teaching and by enhancing their knowledge of science content. The ultimate objective is for the children of Houston to build a personal comprehension of science concepts such that they can apply those concepts to new situations rather than just recite facts. For further information please contact Wallace Dominey.

School Science and Technology
School Science & Technology provides science and technology resources and professional development focused currently on elementary teachers.  The goal is to create a community of learners for Houston area teachers in science & technology and to assist schools and districts with systemic change in science instruction and in the integration of technology into instruction. School Science & Technology is also the home of the Rice Elementary Model Science Lab, the Rice/Aldine ISD Science Collaborative, TAKScopes.com online elementary science curricula, and an eLearning website, Learn.Rice.edu. For further information please contact Wallace Dominey

Culture

Asia Outreach and Global Education
Drawing upon the rich resources of our international city, Asia Outreach and Global Education provides a practical model for teacher professional enhancement, emphasizing the ways different cultures arrange activities and the ideas of daily life into coherent systems of meaning.

Cultural Conversations
Cultural Conversations creates a safe place for teachers and administrators to talk about the impact of race, ethnicity, gender, and culture on students’ learning.  The project’s teacher seminar-style meetings include readings, group discussions, dialogue partners, and case analysis.  promoting community building among group members and allowing time for in-depth discussions of sensitive issues.

Research

Research at the Center is increasingly influencing state and national policy, professional practice in key subject areas, and the public's understanding of the problems -- and possibilities -- of public education.  Since its founding, the Center has sponsored research which links the "micro" levels of schooling, where children are, with the larger, "macro" political, economic and cultural forces which affect teaching and learning.

Creekmore Memorial Symposium and Curriculum Collection

This program was established by the Houston Endowment in 1993 to honor Hazel G. Creekmore by creating a collection of books for use by Rice students and faculty, as well as local educators, and is highlighted each year by a public lecture by a national expert and seminars with local teachers.
