Dr. Dominey grew up in Pasadena, Texas and attended Deer Park schools, graduating in 1972. He is a member of the Deer Park High School Hall of Honor in recognition of his contributions to science and science education. His son (13) is very excited that his Hall of Honor picture in DPHS is next to Yankees pitcher Andy Pettitte, also a DPHS graduate. In 1976, Dr. Dominey taught in Deer Park schools at every grade level as a substitute teacher.
Dr. Dominey attended University of Texas, Austin and graduated as a Junior Fellow, magna cum laude, with a B.A. in Psychology in 1975. He then graduated from Cornell University in New York with a Ph.D. in Ecology, Neurobiology & Animal Behavior in 1981. |

While at Cornell, Dr. Dominey conducted the first long term underwater research on North American freshwater fishes. He then conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Hawaii... studying Hawaiian Drosophila (fruit flies) in Volcanoes National Park... and at the British Museum of Natural History in London and Cameroon working on African cichlid fishes in volcanic crater lakes. While in Cameroon, he discovered new species of African cichlids.
After returning to Houston, Dr. Dominey took a position at Rice University teaching advanced seminars in Ecology and Science Teaching Methods. Since 1998, Dr. Dominey has devoted full time to K-12 educational outreach. Dr. Dominey directs the Rice Regional Collaborative for Excellence in Science Teaching, one of the Texas Regional Collaboratives for Excellence in Science Teaching. Dr. Dominey was instrumental in creating Aldine ISD's science specialist program (1998) for full time campus-based science facilitators and Aldine's TEAMS science teacher mentoring program (2002). In Clear Creek ISD, Dr. Dominey served as Facilities Needs Committee Technology Chairman (2002-03) and established and conducted an after school computer club at Brookwood Elementary for grades 3-5 students (2001-2003). Dr. Dominey's current interests include understanding how technology may most effectively support K-12 instruction. |
