Why is the School Writing Project Important to Your School?

Reading and Writing Effectively are Crucial to Learning
Now, more than ever, teacher-centered projects such as the School Writing Project offer the best professional development for increasing teacher effectiveness and student progress.

The School Writing Project:
• Aligns philosophically and pedagogically with the Houston I.S.D. English Language Arts Project CLEAR curriculum
• Embodies teaching approaches designed to ensure that students meet expectations as outlined in the English Language Arts curriculum for Texas
• Demonstrates teaching approaches that effectively address new student outcomes required by the state curriculum, including style and voice as well as reading and writing across multiple texts

• Provides semester-long seminars during which teachers study and discuss current information on best practices in literacy instruction and implement in their own classrooms
• Develops in teachers greater understanding of the power and importance of the writing process by providing opportunities for them to develop their own writing
• Gives teachers the opportunity to observe successful student-centered classrooms where reading and writing are integrated across the curriculum
