What's New at the Center for Education

Rice Children's Campus to Open in August
The School Literacy and Culture Project will be working with the new Rice Children's Campus to provide its proven program of early literacy and child-centered learning.

Conoco Phillips joins with the Center for Education to create new Elementary Model Science Lab. New Lab to open in Spring Branch in August 2008, bringing the latest proven methods of teaching science to educators from around the area. Click here for details.

New Offices: The Center for Education offices have moved to the International Bank of Commerce Building on Kirby Drive, near the Rice Campus, along with other Rice outreach programs. We have more room to do our work of enriching the practice and pedagogy of Houston-area teachers and research into school improvement issues. We now have expanded meeting space and free visitor parking. Come see us at 5616 Kirby Drive, Suite 320.

Research Methods Handbook of Complementary Methods in Education Research, a new volume from the American Educational Research Association which contains a chapter by the Center's Linda McSpadden McNeil and Eileen Coppola, "Official and Unofficial Stories: Getting at the Impact of Policy On Educational Practice."

Outstanding! Eileen Coppola's book, Powering Up: Learning to Teach Well with Technology has been chosen as one of the American Library Association's "Outstanding Academic Titles" in its Choice magazine (current reviews for academic libraries).

Upcoming Events:

Tuesday, April 29, 2008: Hazel Creekmore Symposium. This year's lecture will address issues surrounding the high numbers of students in our area who fail to graduate from high school. Dr. Neal Lane will speak, and presenting their recent research: Linda McSpadden McNeil, Eileen Coppola, Judy Radigan, and Julian Vasquez Heilig. Location: Shell Auditorium in McNair Hall, 4:30 p.m.

May 2, 2008: School Writing Project Elementary Student Readings. Annual readings for students in the School Writing Project and their teachers; free and open to the public, 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Held at Rice University in the Farnsworth Pavilion in the Ley Student Center. June 2008: Summer Creative Writing Workshops — Three week summer workshops helps students from kindergarten through high school grow as writers in classes with small student-to-teacher ratios. January 17, 2009: School Literacy and Culture Mini-Conference for teachers and parents. Held on the Rice University campus, Duncan Hall, 8:00 a.m. to noon.
