The Hazel Creekmore Symposium brings to the Houston community important new research and nationally-recogized speakers to address the critical issues and extraordinary possibilities for the education of our children. Houston area educators and civic leaders have come to rely on the Creekmore Symposium as an occasion for gaining new ideas, invigorating the local conversation around children and schooling, and for connecting with people across the metropolitan area who share their concerns about children, schools and the policies that shape them.
Hazel Creekmore endowing funds, from The Houston Endowment Inc, enable the Center for Education to expand the reach of the Symposium through additions to the Creekmore Collection on children and schooling in Rice University's Fondren Library. The Creekmore Memorial Curriculum Collection of more than 700 books serves as a professional library for educators and students providing resources on curriculum, teaching, and children. The acquisitions are highlighted each year with a public lecture from national experts and seminars with area teachers. The oversight committee for the Collection welcomes suggestions for future topics. This program was established in 1993 by Houston Endowment Inc., in honor of Hazel G. Creekmore, a Rice University alumna and teacher in the Houston Independent School district with 30 years of service.
